We had an unusual e-mail from Mike in Reston, Virginia. Mike was organizing a fundraiser for the Siberian Husky Rescue Fund. He wanted to eat Organic Doggy Kitchen's doggy biscuits and have people guess how many cookies he can eat in 5 minutes and pledge money per biscuits he'll be eating. So we offered to send Mike a sample of our biscuits for tasting. I personally like to munch on our Cheese Biscuits, Mike thought he would enjoy Peanut Butter & Banana, but after tasting the samples, he decided to go with Apple Cinnamon.

So can you guess how many cookies Mike ate in 5 minutes?

The Amazing Leroy's Birthday Party

He again had many party guests including Andrew from the Greatest American Dog show, and the party theme was Hollywoof! We are very happy to announce that Organic Doggy Kitchen now has a feline team member :) Our marketing director recently welcomed this special boy kitty to her home. She was looking for a home for him for a long time on her sister's behalf, but finally decided to keep him with her. Everybody at Organic Doggy Kitchen is very happy about her decision because animal shelters everywhere have increase in the animal give-ups due to the economy. Congratulations! Now that we have Mozart on board, we have to start working on creating delicious treats for our feline friends. The Biggest Fan of Peanut Butter & Banana

We have been sending out our fresh baked Peanut Butter & Banana biscuits to a customer in Midwest, and since she buys bags of Peanut Butter & Banana at a time, we always thought she had either a really, really big dog, or many dogs, like 4 or 5 dogs. Then, last week, she kindly sent us a photo of her cute doggy, Clover! It's just one doggy, one Clover, who has been eating all those Peanut Butter & Banana biscuits that we baked and shipped!

Well, we cannot blame Clover, the smell of Peanut Butter & Banana biscuits when they are being baked.... yum yum, the entire doggy kitchen smells good, you can even smell the delicious aroma from the parking lot. We ripe our organic bananas to the perfection to make these delicious dog biscuits. But careful Miss Clover, that white bag is not edible... although it probably smells very good, we are sure that it doesn't taste good and not good for you.

More Canine Team Members - Kai & Katie

Just realized, I mentioned Kai & Katie in previous posts but there are no photo of Kai anywhere on this Blog! Kai and Katie are good friends of Kiki and Koby. Kai (left) is a very sweet boy, and Katie (right) is a very bright girl. Katie and Koby are closer in age, so they love to hang out with each other. It's not that often when all four huskies get to be here, it's fun to see the dynamics when all four are in the doggy kitchen! Kai's favorite thing at the doggy kitchen is, in fact, custom-made doggy cakes! Thank you for your help, Kai & Katie!

New Canine Team Member - Panda

Meet another new canine team member, Panda! Panda is a fluffy "big" younger brother of Hashi's. Hashi is a tiny papillon but this pup is already double or even triple the size of little Mr. Hashi! Panda loves to hang out with Koby the Husky here at Organic Doggy Kitchen. He is trying to learn proper canine manners from Koby, although we are not quite sure if Koby is a proper role model for pups...

Here at Organic Doggy Kitchen, our full-time taste testers are Kiki & Koby. Then, we have Kai & Katie the husky who come work with their human mom. Now we have a new taste tester, Hashi! Hashi is an eleven-year-young rescued papillon who loves Organic Doggy Kitchen biscuits. Hashi likes all of our dog biscuits but his mom tells us that his absolute favorite is wheat-free Peanut Butter Biscotti. His teeth are bad, so his mom, who bake doggy biscuits here in the doggy kitchen, brings home fresh baked treats and break them for him. Check out his happy smile :)

It's been so hot this summer, and Organic Doggy Kitchen's mascots, Kiki and Koby are not enjoying the weather. They are huskies from the north so they spend most of the days on cool kitchen floors by the AC vents. We know that there are many dogs out there who are not enjoying the hot weather, so we decided to plan a fun doggy activity, a fundraiser pool party!!!!

Kiki and Koby goes swimming in Middleburg with their husky friends, Kai and Katie. Here, you can see it on YouTube. This pool is designed for horses but is also open for dogs, so we decided to rent it for a private doggy pool party. If your dog is new to swimming, don't worry, the experienced staff at the swim center will help your dog get used to the water and swimming in the smaller pool on site.

We invited a special guest of honor, Amazing Leroy, the canine star from CBS' reality show called Greatest American Dog will be joining the festivity, and there will be doggy goody bags for everyone who join.

The Bark Ball - 400 Dogs in DC to Vote Tomorrow

Everyone at Organic Doggy Kitchen has been having a lot of fun with our Political Dog Biscuits this year. We have had several doggy primaries to see which party animal America's dogs choose, and the doggy primaries have been so much fun. I think tomorrow's voting will be the biggest canine primary ever. The Washington Humane Society is holding the Bark Ball, a black tie gala tomorrow, and they invited us to host a doggy primary for 400 canine party guests!

I think it's going to be so much fun. We have been baking lots of Political Dog Biscuits this week, as you can imagine. So far, Democratic Donkey biscuits have been selling more, a couple of stores ordered just donkey biscuits. They all started out with the equal number of Donkey and Elephant biscuits, but donkeys sold out before the Elephants at these stores. Let's see what happens this weekend at the Bark Ball!

Fundraiser for Nova the Bull Mustiff

The other day, we heard from our friend Nancy, who owns a super nice dog boutique called Dog Krazy in Fredericksburg. Nancy received a call from her vet about a dog that was abandoned by her owners. Nova, a 2 year old bull mastiff, had been surrendered to her vet because she needs cruciate surgery and her owners did not want to pay for it and they asked the vet to put her to sleep. So Nancy rescued her, and she is having a fundraiser event this Saturday, on May 31st to raise $3000 for Nova's surgery and then Nancy can find her a good home.

Organic Doggy Kitchen has donated an organic doggy gift box for Nova. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it but if you are close to Fredericksburg, make sure to stop by because you can get a Big Sloppy Kiss or two from Miss Nova. I met Nova last weekend, no wonder Nancy fell in love with her, Nova is a truly sweet dog, 100+lbs. of sweetness! Nova is very cuddly and she loves pig ears. Delicious Smelling Political Dog Biscuits

We recently heard from many people mention how good smelling our political biscuits are. Well, Political Dog Biscuits smell soooo good in the oven and baking them make us hungry in the doggy kitchen!

Even though you can't tell from this photo, Lucy and Charlotte are hardworking dogs at London Dog. They are in charge to make sure everything is delicious and healthy for doggies. Here is a happy comment we received.

"Lucy, our beagle, does not like crunchy treats but she loved your treats! It turns out that one of my dogs is a republican and the other is a democrat. How funny. I can't wait for our customers tomorrow, this will be fun! The biscuits smell really good!"

Petorama, a very fun doggy information website, gave us a "5 paws" rating in their March product review, it's their highest score! Petorama says...

This charming lady is Lola, the taste tester of Paw Luxury. According to her human parents, Lola " thinks Organic Doggy Kitchen's Treats are to wag for. Shes gives these treats 2 paws up and barks that they are drool worthy." Lola loves our biscuits that she somehow convinced her parents to carry Organic Doggy Kitchen biscuits at Paw Luxury.

Well, Lola is a very socially conscious canine. What's special about Paw Luxury is that they care very much about the environment, safety of pet foods, as well as how they are made. They have very high standards and thorough screening process to make sure that ALL of the products they carry are eco-friendly, natural or organic, and meeting humane and fair trade standards.

I love talking with store owners who carry Organic Doggy Kitchen biscuits, they care so much about dog's health and well-being, and as well as the health of the Earth and environment and animal welfare. Smallest Doggy Customer

Meet Miss Bailey, our smallest doggy customer! I met Bailey when Organic Doggy Kitchen was invited to cater a table at "Doggy Happy Hour" at a condo complex in town where Bailey's mom works as manager. You know the size of our Political Dog Biscuits bags, compare and you can see how tiny Bailey is! She is not a puppy, all grown-up. Can you guess how much she weighs? Only 2.7 pounds!!! Koby, our big boy husky weighs 67 lbs, that's 25 Baileys! Bailey and her mom came visit us during the Falls Church Doggy Happy Hour, we'll do the BIG event again next month on May 2. It's happening again!! We had so much fun last year at the Doggy Happy Hour so Organic Doggy Kitchen is organizing a fun doggy event in Falls Church. This Friday, April 4 from 6pm to 8pm at the parking lot of Art and Frame of Falls Church (111 Park Avenue)!

We invited the homeless dogs and cats of Lost Dog Rescue, the homeless dogs of the Homeward Trails Rescue along with other local pet businesses such as PetMAC, Anderson Photography, Purrfect Grrooming, and Doggie Walkers and It's a Dog's Life Films to join this fun event. Please swing by with your doggy because we'll be hoding a doggy primary with Capitol Dog Bakery's Political Dog Biscuits & giving out a litlte doggy cupcakes for responsible canine citizens who vote! We have had three primaries so far, the Donkeys won the first round, the Elephants won the 2nd and 3rd.

If you are local to the DC metro area, or even if you are just visiting town with your dog, it's really fun to visit Bark 'N Bubbles in Herndon & Ashburn. Kiki, Organic Doggy Kitchen's culinary advisor, went to get pampered at Bark 'N Bubbles.

Bark 'N Bubbles is a great fun doggy place because they have doggy events throughout the year. You can bring your dogs, and either bathe them yourself, or get them professionally bathed. Kiki seemed to enjoy being bathed by friendly professionals of Bark N Bubbles because she loved the feeling of getting pampered! You have to try Blueberry Facial; tastes sweet and Kiki loved it!

You can also find our Organic Doggy Kitchen biscuits & Political Dog Biscuits in their retail area. Bark 'N Bubbles also have goodies for people, a coffee/smoothe bar. You have to try their Mango Smoothie, it's really delicious.

Doggy Cake for 50+ Cavaliers!

Recently, Organic Doggy Kitchen made a really fun cake

for a really fun doggy party. DC Area Cavalier Spaniel Meetup Group celebrated their 1 year anniversary, and over 50 cavaliers and their people came to celebrate this fun event. The party was held at Dogtopia in Rockville, an indoor doggy daycare facility. This is a very moist pumpkin cake, yum yum, and it turned out that all cavaliers agreed it was indeed very delicious. The organizer of the event told us,

"Your cake was a HUGE HIT! Cavaliers were jumping up on the table and stealing slices! No kidding! "

They also held a doggy primary using Capitol Dog Bakery's political dog biscuits, and guess who won this round... It turns out that the cavaliers in nation's capital area prefers Elephants!

Doggy Primary in Virginia

Yesterday, Organic Doggy Kitchen held a unique event called Virgnia Doggy Primary at Nature's Nibbles yesterday. It was soooo much fun! Capitol Dog Bakery's Political Dog Biscuits come in the shape of elephants and donkeys, and they are the exact same Peanut Butter & Honey flavor, but we found out recently that our dogs have preferences... So we invited our local canine residents to come to Nature's Nibbles in Alexandria, and asked them to choose donkeys or elephants.

And many dogs walked in to just vote! One person walked in without a dog and told us he is casting an absentee vote on behalf of his dog. We also had one out-of-state canine voter who drove over 1 hour to just vote. But we decided to let him become an honorary Virginia canine resident and welcomed him to vote, too :)

We had a total of 24 votes. The result is - local doggies support Donkey Biscuits -10 elephants and 14 donkeys! People asked me if we put more peanut butter in donkey biscuits, but no, they are the very same recipe!

We also made little doggy cupcakes as a special treat for responsible canine citizen who voted. Lee and Donna from Anderson Photography joined and raffled for a free pet photo session, and it was a huge success! You can check out Lee's photos beautiful canine photos on his website.

Doggy Friendly Salon - Gerogetown

Can you believe there is a hair salon that you can go to with your dogs? It's not a doggy groomer - it's a real people hair salon & spa! Jean-Luc Salon in Georgetown welcomes well-mannered canines, in fact, one of their stylists comes to work with his dog!

So Kiki, Organic Doggy Kitchen's canine culinary advisor, and I went to visit LoAnn, my favorite hair stylist. LoAnn is really the greatest, I have been seeing her for 10 years now but this is the first time I went to get my hair done with my dog! I was not 100% sure how Kiki would behave, but she did enjoy the visit very much.

Here are my pointers as to what to expect when you go visit LoAnn with your dog.

1. Your dog must be able to accompnay you in a small change room and wait with you while you change into a salon robe.

2. Your dog must be able to go up and down the narrow and somewhat steep staircases.

3. Your dog must not freak out from the sound of hair dryers.

4. Your dog must be able to relax on the floor. Kiki enjoyed lounging on the well-polished hardwood floor. But she is a northern dog and she prefers cool, hard floors.

5. Your dog must be patient and be able to wait for you at your feet. Don't bring your dog if you are coloring your hair and expect to stay in the salon for hours!

And at the end, your doggy may receive a special delicious treat! Then, you can stroll through Georgetown with great hair with your dog and enjoy a happy doggy day in nation's capital!

Leroy's Circus Doggy Party

Happy New Year!

We had a very fun weekend. We had an honor of catering doggy goodies for a very special doggy birthday party! My friend Leroy, a truly talented border collie, turned 5 and his mom threw him a big birthday party at a local museum, and there were over 20 canine guests and many people guests as well.

Last year's party theme was beach party, and this year's was Circus! So we made a very big doggy birthday cake that looked like a circus tent, and also made lots and lots of decorated biscuits shaped like clowns, elephants, lions, poodles, etc. In 2 hours, all the biscuits were gone.

But there was more. Leroy's mom is so generous that she had a doggy treat bar for all the canine guests, and everyone got to take home our organic doggy biscuits, as much as they wanted. What a party!

By the way, if you want your doggy to be as talented as Leroy, his mom can show you how. She is an amazing dog trainer!

Holiday Danger List for Dogs

The holidays are around the corner, and there are several food items we'd like for you to keep away from your dogs. It is Organic Doggy Kitchen's wish that everyone, humans and canines alike, get to spend a very happy holiday together without a visit to an emergency vet. Below are some of the food that you find commonly in your house during the holiday season.

Raisins & Grapes: If ingested, they could cause renal failure in dogs AND cats. So make sure to keep those raisins away from your furries.

Macadamia Nuts: Nuts are holiday favorites but macadamias are toxic to our canine friends! They may cause weakness, depression, vomiting, etc. In the nuts family, it's a good idea to avoid feeding walnuts and black walnuts to your dogs.

Chocolates: Do not leave chocolate boxes under the tree, even if they are wrapped! Dogs like chololate's sweet smell so they may help themselves. Caffeine & theobromine in chocolates can cause serious problems in pets such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive panting, etc. Darker the chocolate, more toxic to pets.

Yeasty Dough: If you are making homemade bread (yum!), be careful so that your dogs won't grab the rising dough. The dough will keep expanding in their stomach and cause problems.

No caffeinated drinks or alcohol for doggies during the holiday parties! They'll be content with their bowl of fresh water.

So if you are baking homemade bread with raisins and macadamia nuts and chocolate chips and your dog sneaks up on the kitchen counter while the dough is rising, you are in serious trouble.

If your dogs ingest any of the food items above, call your vet right away! If your vet is closed, you can either call emergency vets in your town. ASPCA has a 24-hour call center to help you as well. You can call Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. But we certainly hope you'll have a very safe and happy holidays and won't have to call the emergency.

Get Well Cupcakes for a Special Doggy

Last week, doggy chefs at Organic Doggy Kitchen made special treats for a very special doggy, Beau. The request was to make something special as a get well wish for Beau the Beagle. We added some color to cheer up Beau and his family. Beau shared these delicious (I ate one!) cupcakes with his sister, and as his Mom told us later, they both enjoyed them :) I had an honor to meet this special boy when I delivered the cakes, and he is very cute and sweet! Everyone at the doggy kitchen is sending well-wishes for you, Beau!

Dogs Gone Political

Organic Doggy Kitchen has created very fun new products for political canines; Political Dog Biscuits are finally here! They are peanut-butter & honey flavored and low in fat, and of course, everything we use is human-grade certified orgnaic. The red bag is filled with republican elephant shaped biscuits, and the blue bag is filled with democratic donkey biscuits. They are the same flavor, so you can ask your dog which party animal they prefer or want to chomp! A perfect gift for politically savvy and the dogs who have everything.

We are donating a portion of each sale of these political biscuits to Washington Humane Society, who helps neglected, abused and homeless animals in Washington, D.C. Capotil Dog Bakery's product website is still under construction but we plan to report on which bags are selling more throughout 2008. As of today, both bags are selling equally! Pet Food Label Basics - Ingredient List

Do you know how to read pet food label? We realize that many of our customers are pet food savvy and already know this, but I went to a very interesting seminar on dog nutrition and pet obesity yesterday, and decided to share some basics on how to read pet food label.

What Is Your Dog Really Eating?

All pet food products, including our organic dog biscuits, must list ingredients on the back label. It's the law! If you grab a food or treat or any food items for your dogs and cats and the ingredients are not listed, not good news! Manufactures must list them in the order of descending weight (in most states). So the first ingredient on the label is what your dog is eating the most out of that food. Then, second is the second most thing in that food, third, and so on. This is true to any types of pet food, whether canned food, kibbles, treats, biscuits, etc.

Now we know that the first few items on the ingredients is what you'd like your dog to eat, because most likely that's the most food your dog is eating on daily basis. In case of dry food, it should be some sort of high quality protein.

High Quality Protein

What is high quality protein? Well, it should be protein source that you recognize from your grocery store. Beef, chicken, lamb, venison, rabbit, salmon, whatever it may be but make sure it's specific and make sure it's not "by-products" of animal source. Not all "by-products" are bad because it can be nutritional parts like liver. However, if a high quality food is using liver, it's probably listed as "beef liver" or "chicken liver" rather than "by-products". In general, "by-products" are probably mixed with not so appetizing body parts like chicken feet, beaks, etc.

It's probably a very good idea to avoid food that lists "meat meal" or "meat and bone meal." You may ask, "what meat is in the meat meal"? Exactly! In "meat" meal, we don't know what sort of meat it is because they don't have to specify it as far as it's some sort of "meat." It can be road-kills, diseased animals, talk about scary! Same is true with "animal fat." What "animal" are they talking about? Well, we don't know... So remember, animal source in "meat meal" and "animal fat" are MYSTERY CREATURES! FYI, here at Organic Doggy Kitchen, we do not use any mystery meats. In fact, most of our dog biscuits are strictly vegetarian!

Additives & Preservatives

Sugar and salt are not necessary, either. Another thing you may want to avoid is food coloring. Why does dog food have to look bright red and yellow? Does your dog care? No! It's there to please your human eyes.

When you bake cookies, you know it's done because the dough turns brown-ish in color. As dog bakery, we know how much coloring you need to put in a dough to keep that bright color in order to overcome baking (browning) effects. Occasional food coloring will probably not do harm to your dog, but if you are feeding bright colors to your dog every single day for a long-period of time, you may want to be careful...

You'd probably want to avoid certain chemical preservatives, too. Some of the infamous ones are BHA and BHT which are added to preserve fats. These chemicals are proven to be harmful to lab animals. But it's probably a good idea to avoid them to be on the safe side. It's also notable that the amount of BHA/BHT allowed for pet food is much higher than the amount allowed for humans, so we may want to be careful!

Another preservatives to be careful of is Ethoxyquin. There are more than a few reports identifying this chemical preservative as possible cause of illness/health problems in many dogs. You can do a quick Google search on Ethoxyquin and dogs, and you'll be surprised. Organic Doggy Kitchen does not use any of these additives in our organic dog biscuits.

In Short...

It is kind of scary, but we don't mean to scare you. It is our sincere wish that your dogs eat healthy quality food to live a happy long life with you! Here's good news! You don't have to worry about these ingredients or memorize them if you shop at natural pet supply stores. All of our customer stores care so much about your pets' health that their shelves are stocked with only high quality pet food. You can select any of the items from their shelves without any worries. And if you have any questions, staff members at these stores are very knowledgeable and they can answer your questions and help you choose the right food for your dogs.

Did you have a fun Halloween? Organic Doggy Kitchen had an honor of making a Halloween Doggy Cake for one of our customer stores, PetMAC in Arlington. PetMAC is a very special store because they work together with Homeward Trails Rescue Group, and every single time you purchase pet food and supplies at PetMAC, you are in fact helping homeless animals! Needless to say, all the food they sell is of course all natural and very high-quality.

Kiki and Koby and I couldn't make it to the party because we had a lot of biscuits to bake at the Doggy Kitchen, but Cindy, the owner of PetMAC just told me today that everyone loved the cake, and "nary a crumb was left to bring home!" Cindy even tried it and said it was tasty!

Howl-O-Ween Ice Cream Social

South Run Dogs, a small group of carind dog owners, are hosting a Howl-o-Ween Ice Cream social event on Sunday, October 28! They are having a Halloween costume contest, and Organic Doggy Kitchen is going to offer an assortment of organic dog biscuits to the winner!

South Run Dogs kindly invited me to do this big job, to be the judge of the contest, what a big job!! If you live close to the area, you should join this group because they seem to have lots of fun doggy activities throughout the year.

Doggy Birthday at Dogs by Day & Nite

This weekend, we made a special birthday cake for a dog named Katrina. She is having a birthday party at this awesome doggy daycare called "Dogs by Day & Nite." Miss Kiki has been there a few times for sleep-overs, and it's great because they care about dogs so much that they have a staff member who sleeps with doggies at night! It's like a doggy pajama party!! Another reason we love Dogs by Day is because they have a 24-hour lobby service, and you can drop off and pick up your dog as soon as you come back from your trip!

Anyways, back to Katrina's doggy cake. Katrina is a white Akita. What a coincidence, we happened to have an "Akita cookie cutter"!! And another coincidence, I happen to be Japanese, where Akitas are from, so I wrote Akita in Japanese on the cookie!!

Katrina likes peanut butter so we made the frosting with peanut butter, and put an extra layer of peanut butter, yum yum!

Dog Food 101 - The World's First Dog Food

Did you know that the first dog food was literally "dog biscuits"? Mr. James Spratt, an electrician from Ohio, first invented dog food.

In the 1860s, Mr. Spratt traveled to London on business. There were no airplanes back then, so he traveled by boat. He saw dogs in the shipyard eating leftover biscuits that sailors took for their long journeys.

Until then, companion dogs fed on leftover human food, including meats, grains, and veggies. But biscuits are easy to feed, have longer shelf lives, and best of all, easy to carry. And voila, dog biscuits were born! Mr. Spratt started creating dog biscuits made of wheat, veggies and meat. These first generation dog biscuits came in rather stylish looking tins. They are really cute!

K9 Karnival: Lost Dog & Cat Rescue

This Saturday, Lost Dog Rescue is hosting a fun, fundraiser event for dogs called "K9 Karnival"! Organic Doggy Kitchen is donating a gift box of our organic doggy treats, and if you are lucky, maybe you'll win!

I came to know Lost Dog Rescue several years ago when I met its president, Marcia in a doggy training class. It was a great class offered by Leash and Collar. Lost Dog Rescue is a great organization, they do help lots of dogs and cats every year, so please join the fun with your dog and help homeless animals!

Doggy Massage Lesson

Another fun doggy event is happening this weekend. Homeward Trails, a rescue group that helps rural dogs of West Virginia find homes in the DC metro area, is hosting a event called Hot Dog Round Up. What a name!! All kinds of fun activities for dogs and their humans, you just have to check out the event website!

PetMAC will be hosting a table there and offering Organic Doggy Kitchen's handmade organic dog biscuits, so join this fun, fundraiser with your dog and help homeless animals!

1500 Dog Lovers!

I had such a wonderful day yesterday. Green Pets, one of the very first stores to carry our biscuits, kindly invited Organic Doggy Kitchen to participate in their booth at Washington Humane Society's Walk for the Animals at the National Mall. The weather was gorgerous, the sky was blue, and many many many happy dogs and people! Over 1500 people participated in this year's walk along with their beloved canine family members. This is the biggest doggy cake we've ever made. It originally said "WALK" for the animals but it got sliced by the time I got the camera out. The cake was very heavy but was popular and almost all gone within an hour!

The event had such positive energy everywhere, can you imagine being around 1500 people who care so much about homeless animals? It was just such a happy day, people were happy, dogs were happy, and so was I! I met several people & doggies who are fans of our Organic Doggy Kitchen biscuits!! Thank you so much for stopping by to say hi, and thank you also for supporting local homeless animals.

I highly recommend everyone to join the event next year, even if you don't have dogs, just join and enjoy the outdoor festivity, it's just so much fun! Free Doggy Cake - Sept 1 in Del Ray

This cake was our weekend project here at Organic Doggy Kitchen. Mr. Robbie, a cutest Cavalier, celebrated his 2nd birthday with his doggy friends. We made a mostly-organic pumpkin-flavored cake and goody bags of organic Peanut Butter & Banana biscuits for his barkday party. A little bit of color was added to the icing to match the party theme color of blue, purple and lime green. It was a lot of fun :)

Nature's Nibbles in Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria is having a grand-reopening celebration on September 1. We'll be making a big cake (flavor TBD) for everyone to enjoy and bring it over to the store, so if your dogs like to try a piece of our cake, this is your chance! I must confess, I eat dog biscuits. Not any dog biscuits, just the ones that we bake ourselves. Our organic dog biscuits smell so yummy in the oven, and you just have to try them when they come out. Cheese biscuits are good for lunch-time, and Apple-Cinnamon and Peanut Butter & Banana are great for mid-afternoon snacks, they go well with a cup of tea :) We just found out we are not the only ones.

One of our retail customers sent us an e-mail and said...

'' I have one client that loves to eat them himself and always keeps a bag in his car!!!"

And Lois, my neighbor and animal massage therapist, buys our biscuits for her canine clients. And she said her husband ate our Peanut Butter & Banana biscuits and he actually really liked them, funny! Just for record, Organic Doggy Kitchen does not recommend humans to eat our dog biscuits! Well, I do because I test one out of every batch to ensure deliciousness, but if you eat your dog's biscuits, you know that's one less biscuit for your dog... Can you stand those sad eyes?

Tails Pet Magazine

Have you seen "Go Green" issue of the latest "Capital Tails Magazine" at pet stores near you? If you are not in the D.C. metro areal, don't worry, Tails Inc. has publications everywhere around the country. It's a very nice magazine, rescue friendly and you can tell that people who make this magazine truly, deeply care for dogs and cats.

Our Peanut Butter & Banana organic dog biscuits was featured in this issue. What's in them? Organic whole wheat flour, organic rye flour, organic bananas, organic peanut butter, organic eggs, and organic flax seeds. So they are indeed vegetarian dog biscuits!

We make sure to ripen bananas to perfection, and this is actually one of the most irresistibly good smelling biscuits when they are in the oven. And yes, since they are irresistibly good smelling, I always eat a few when they come out of the oven and it's actually hard to stop munching on them.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know. We try to be Eco-friendly as much as possible, and if you order our biscuits, you'll see that our shipping peanuts are doggy-friendly and actually edible! And believe me, I ate one. My dogs ate some that fell on the floor, too!

New Dog Wash in Herndon

I went to a really, really cute dog wash last weekend to help out the Dog Wash Fundraiser for Furry Suits Rescue. The fundraiser was held at this brand new dog wash place in Herndon, VA, called Bark & Bubbles! You should check out the website before you go because they have different specials every day of the week.

Bark & Bulles also has a cafe for people, and if you go there, you MUST try their mango smoothie! It was one of the best mango smoothies I had.

The cake I made for this event was Carob & Banana cake with Peanut Butter icing. It was yummy, believe me, I tried it before serving :)

Doggy Happy Hour - Photo Contest Winner!

Last Friday, we had a Doggy Happy Hour in Falls Church. Clix Photo Studio, Purr-fect Grrooming, DoggyWalkers and homeless dogs of Lost Dog Rescue joined this fun event! We baked a big doggy cake and it was very popular among our canine friends. We also held a photo contest. Dr. Michele Kelly of Falls Church Animal Hospital chose our winner! And the winner is... Maggie! Cheers to Maggie!

This is what Maggie's family says about her. Very sweet!

" We just adopted her from the lost dog and cat rescue center and she has been one of the best dogs ever!!! She is sweet, energetic, fun to play with, and 26 pounds of filling love!!! Price of a Puppy in Japan

Hello! I didn't Blog for a while because I was in Japan for a few weeks, just came back! I have to tell you what I saw in a pet store in my hometown in Yokohama. I went to visit a pet store and see what's available there. My conclusion, the labeling laws there are not as strict as it is here. I saw some treats that lists NO ingredients, or treats that obviously look like made with preservatives and colorings but not identified as one of the ingredients. I also saw this a little disturbing treats, Horse Jerky..., dried meat of horse for dogs...

It made me sad to see small animals, kittens and pups on sale in the store. The store also has a vet's office inside, and they seem to live in pretty clean environment. I saw a tiny toy poodle puppy there. Guess how much he costs... You will be amazed... A puppy in a pet store.

A few hundred dollars?

Try again!

One thousand?

Nope, not enough.

Three thousand?

You have a way more to go.

Five thousand?

You have to climb up and up further.

The price of this puppy was about $9000.00 (US). Yes, nine thousand dollars! I had to count how many zeros were there in that price tag because that's about one million Japanese yen!!

He was sound asleep and I couldn't see how pretty he was, but let me tell you, I believe my rescued huskies are as good of dogs as the $9000 dollar puppy!

Of course, he was THE MOST expensive puppy in the store, but the puppy price seemed to start from a few thousand dollars. FYI, I am against puppy mills and store-sold animals... there are so many loving dogs looking for home, and guess what, if I had a $9000 to spare on a dog, I can adopt a friendly dog and donate the rest of the money to save many other homeless dogs!

Doggy Truffles

As a doggy chef, I am committed to making absolutely delicious and healthy goodies for dogs. Once in a while, I get to make special doggy treats. I get to use the"fun" side of creativity and use a little bit of coloring to add visual effect to the canine cuisine experience. The picture here is "doggy truffles" that I made yesterday. They are miniature peanut butter biscuits covered with yogurt coating. I used yogurt icing and festive doggy confetti! Kiki is in love with these treats, but she doesn't get to have them to often. They are indeed a special treat for her.

Where To Find Safe Pet Food in DC & Northern Virginia

I just saw the news that FDA is banning wheat gluten from China. Apparently, it was the wheat gluten that caused the death/sickness of so many pets in this country and the recent massive recall. The toxic substance they found in gluten, "melamine" is used in plastics, etc. How does such a thing get into "wheat gluten"? It's pretty scary that even "Prescription Diet" food that you get from your vet's office is being recalled!

Organic Doggy Kitchen have been receiving a number of inquiries about dog food from concerned local dog parents. We are a wholesale/Internet dog bakery without a storefront but we had a few customers showing up at our door last week looking for us. Unfortunately, we don't make pet food so we refer them to our retail customers because the food they have selected to carry in their stores are the best of the best in today's market. Meet Ben

Did you see NBC's Today Show yesterday? There was a segment on someone from the animal shelter that I volunteer for, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. Once a week, I visit the shelter to take pictures of homeless dogs, and sometimes, small animals for their website. I have been doing this for quite some time now.

The story was about how Dolores, our volunteer coordinator left her corporate job to take this non-profit position, but she enjoys it much more than her previous job. Then, there were many shots of "BEN." Ben is a very special dog that we have at the shelter, and I try to promote him every opportunity that I have, so I have to tell you about him, too.

Ben looks like a little bit like a Beagle, but Ben's Mom was a purebred boxer. She was rescued from Louisiana after the Hurricane Katrina and came all the way to Alexandria. One morning, a shelter staff walked in the kennel, and found 2 pups in her cage! She was so skinny that nobody knew she was pregnant!!

So we had two brand new pups! Ben, and his brother, Cajun. Mom and Cajun both found home already, but Ben is still at the shelter. He was born with a hind leg that was not fully functional, and went through some rehab sessions. But not to worry, he can walk fine and in fact, runs pretty fast, like a normal pup. In fact, he does run fast so you probably can't catch him once he starts playing the "Catch Me If You Can!" game with a toy in his mouth.

Ben turned 1 year old in November of 2006, and we celebrated his birthday at the shelter. I baked a big doggy birthday cake for him, of course, made with mostly organic ingredients. In the above photo, he looks sad because the cake was too big for him and he was told to stop eating it. But big-hearted Ben shared his cake with all of his doggy friends at the shelter!

Today, April of 2007, Ben still doesn't have a home. So I am taking every opporunity to spread the word about him. If you know someone who is looking for a special dog, please help spread the word, too!

William, a Weimaraaber Mix with white markings, escaped from his foster home on March 10 in Arlington on March 10. He is a homeless dog cared by Friends of Homeless Animals, where I used to volunteer as kennel helper a while ago. William escaped from his foster home on March 10. He has been spotted in the area around Bailey's Crossroads, Route 7, Columbia Pike, and Sleepy Hollow Park. That's not too far from our Doggy Kitchen, in fact, my commute route! I am helping Friends of Homeless Animals to put flyers up.

If you see William, do not chase him but just call the rescue group. He is very shy! If you happen to live or work in that area, South Arlington, Annandale, Falls Church, please, please visit this website and print & post flyers. He has been roaming around for 20 days now and everyone is very worried for him, I want him to be safe ASAP!

The Tail Waggin' Jamboree

It sounds like there will be a big fun next weekend in downtown Fredericksburg! A rescue group run by a mom and a daughter called Friends-Fur-Life is organizing a fundraiser event to benefit their homeless animals. It's called The Tail Wagging' Jamboree" on Friday, April 6. What a great name! Check out the details here. I wish I could join, but I'll be super busy next week so will have to miss it, sadly. At Organic Doggy Kitchen, we make multigrain dog biscuits made with ONLY certified organic ingredients. We cater to puppy parties and offer baking service, too!

I know a lot of dog parents are very worried about their dog food these days after that scary Menu Foods incident... We are a very small company, and you can be assured that our biscuits don't have rat poisoning in them because I EAT OUR DOG BISCUITS as well as my two beloved Siberian Huskies, Kiki and Koby. You'll know our treats are safe because I'd be the first to get sick and if I was sick, our cookies wound't make it to the post office or UPS Store! I must confess, I don't mind being a human guinea pig at all. I put a lot of effort creating these cookies and they are pretty delicious. This morning, I was at a meeting with a number of wonderful local business owners, and I met Geoff Livingston, who is an expert in business communications. Here is his blog, it's called Diary of An Ad Man! I learned a lot from Geoff's presentation, and he recommended that I should start Blogging about my life in the doggy kitchen! So here I am!
